[K12OSN] setting .doc globally for OO

Dumping java at this point would be a really bad idea.

Sun was able to put together a decent Access replacement because of the 
java database connectivity layer. They are the ones footing the bill for 
development and should pick whatever tools to develop in that they see fit.
If anything, more effort should be put into what Redhat is doing to 
ensure that the GCJ/GNU Classpath java stack works will with the open 
office code.  Fedora's implementation is 100% open source and it is 
usable, but there are still some bugs to work out.

Back on topic, OpenOffice 1.x had the ability to read an environmental 
variable to globally set MS formats as the default. I'm sure the removal 
of this in 2.0 was no accident.
Why not just make sure that OpenOffice is the default app to open .doc 
files? Let the office suite write to ODFs by default, the proliferation 
of this format is a good thing.
