You need to install a version of GCC that is between 3.2 and 3.4

You should be able to install that, without removing whatever version your
system has.

I don't know what distro you are using, but I'm using Ubuntu and Debian,
and for those, it's a simple 'apt-get install gcc-3.4'.

Also, if you can just wait until next tuesday (Apr 4th), LTSP-4.2 will be 
released, and you can just do a binary installation.
