[K12OSN] sound... still not working

.... and to follow that last post up, a few other strange things are going
on:
1. esdplay soundfile.wav -- pauses as if it's playing something, and
exits normally, but no sound
2. totem -- fails with error "could not open resource for writing"
3. other sound players seem to be playing but no sound. Only the test
sounds from the sound control panel produce any output... and only after I
start up esd on the local workstation.
