Just to clarify, do you get this error when X tries to start or before?  It looks like 
an X error.  Assuming that's the case, you could try setting

XSERVER = "vesa"

in your lts.conf file.  I've had some Compaqs that only seemed happy with that setting. 
  Just a shot in the dark.
