And that's very annoying, as well as unnecessary (IMHO).

Rpm provides a way to recognize modified configuration files, so they
don't get overwritten.  If the gdm rpm doesn't support this, then it's
badly configured.

FWIW, a few K12LTSP packages ALSO display this annoying behavior.
