What does top / hdparm / free outputs look like from the server. Do
they start off slow or they become slow? What is the backbone network?
If it is 10mbps with hubs then switch to 100 mbps and switched.
Basically need more information to get to the root of slowdown.

Just a guess any one running chess game? If yes then remove it and you
will see a huge difference.
