Another approach would be to use LTSP itself to start up a shell on the 
terminal:

Edit /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf

Uncomment the "SCREEN_02 = shell" line and reboot the terminal

Now you can press "Ctrl-Alt-F2" to get to a shell on the terminal, or 
"Ctrl-Alt-F1" to get back to the normal GUI.
