To build on Les's second idea (different subnet ranges), I use an
extension of this that I'll call "the method of different VLAN's."  Of
course, your switches do need to support VLAN's and trunking, and you'll
need to configure your DHCP server to serve a different subnet to each
VLAN.  If you can do that, then this will give you the most flexibility
in physical deployment of servers and clients.
