To execute the POS you will need to run the sh file not the bat.  The bat is for windows and sh is for MAC, unix, and linux.  You are also correct about the cash drawer support for the client only working on windows, this is due to the SDK released by the manufacturer (but this will change soon!).  The client or POS can run on windows, mac or linux, but the backend must run on linux.  If you have anymore questions please let me know.
