[K12OSN] custom compiled kernel will be replaced with yum update?

Our district made a "custom kernel" which basically means they compiled proprietary nic drivers into it that enable Gig capability. If I run a general yum update (like I've been doing), will a new kernel release overwrite this "specialized" kernel, and if so, is there a way around it?
