[K12OSN] Sound not working on new install

Huh, I can't think of what I might have done wrong, but on a virtually new
install of K12LTSP 6.0 (what will be our second server now!) I can't get
sound on the workstations. I have tried a few troubleshooting steps:

- when the terminal is booting up you can see that it is accepting
connections on port 16001

- telnet localhost 16001 from the teminal's screen 2 works fine, but from
anywhere else telnet 192.168.1.251 16001 (the local ip of the terminal)
results in

[admin at server ~]$ telnet 192.168.1.253
Trying 192.168.1.253...
telnet: connect to address 192.168.1.253: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
[admin at server ~]$ ping 192.168.1.253

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.112/0.117/0.123/0.012 ms
[admin at server ~]$

- trying System > Preferences > Sound and selecting ESD and trying a test
gives me just

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink profile=chat: Could not establish connection to sound
server

- Firewalls and SELinux are both disabled

- hosts file has the localhost 127.0.0.1 etc at the top

I'm feeling a little dense, I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

Thanks,
Tom Wolfe
