Maybe this is a dumb idea, but what about a bunch of core files that
got created from a crashing application? Like OO.o or Firefox?   Only
ask because I once did a patch and then ended up with a lot of them
when the apps started crashing.  Mine had names like core.xxyyzz  If
it is the issue a simple use of the find command can locate them?

e.g. find / -name 'core*' -print
