You can also get a dlink dcs-900 for about 60-70 bucks. It has a little built in webserver that you can get the image from a URL like http://camera_ip/image.jpg
Would be trivial to set up a cron job to do a wget on that image.
Not great quality, but you should be able to tell if people are in the lab.
