[K12OSN] RE: K12ltsp and K12linux

Hi folks
seems we're all waiting for k12linux, however here we have managed to get ltsp5 working on fedora 9, and incorporated all the features of k12lltsp that we wanted. It does include openoffice 3 and java enabled firefox, flash, sound. etc. works a treat. It would be good to see a dedicated release for sure as we had a few problems with teacher tool and other minor issues which have taken time to rectify, but the effort has been worthwhile. It was necessary to do this as some of the clients we are using had pxe bootable cards not recognised by 4.2, and this has been solved by using 5
Also of interest is the discussion on sugar. Here we have settled on gnome as it (for us) is the easiest way for students to connect to files on servers other then the lts that exist on the network, and offers an interface closer to other operating systems in the school.
So while we wait for a dedicated iso, we will keep working on adding things in to our current set-up

Which repository should we target? I was reading a thread about 'CentOS exactly tracks RHEL. Therefore, we may see it in RHEL 6, thus CentOS 6, and thus K12Linux 6EL.' with regard to OO3 yesterday. Does this apply? Or is there a more appropriate repository?
Our Jabber server still needs a considerable amount of work. There is a significant amount of unnecessary overhead in the current implementation. So scaling is limited. I'll follow up when when we have a working implementation ready as a RPM.

LTSP and K12LTSP are changing. Currently K12LTSP uses LTSP 4.2. Future
versions will use LTSP 5, which is a major change. Without getting into
too many details, LTSP 5 requires some changes at the distro level.
Fedora is currently implementing these changes, so there looks like
there will definitely be a Fedora-based K12LTSP (renamed K12Linux, I
think).
But will there be a CentOS-based one? I'm not sure. My guess is that
K12LTSP 5EL (the current CentOS-based version, using LTSP 4.2) will not
be upgraded for a while. Before a new version comes out, RedHat must
implement the distro-level changes that Fedora is currently doing.
Maybe that'll happen with their next release, but I don't know if it's
something they're working on or not. Anybody?
By the way, you might also want to check w/ the Edubuntu folks. They
are pushing LTSP use in schools as well.

Yes, this is how CentOS works. CentOS is just a rebuild of RHEL source
packages with the branding removed.
I hear there are Fedora packages for Sugar now. A nice way to make Sugar
available to CentOS/RHEL, and thus K12LTSP EL, would be to make those
packages available in the EPEL repository which provides Fedora packages
to RHEL/CentOS 4 and 5: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL

Some programs, such as tuxtype, change the desktop screen resolution when users start the program. Is there a way to prevent this? I had to log out the user, and log them back in to get back to the correct resolution. Is there a preferred resolution with k12ltsp?
