Re: [K12OSN] squidGuard not working

http://wiki.squid-cache.org/SquidFaq/InterceptionProxy

At work, we do it in conjunction with the Cisco router without WCCP.

Can someone point me to or make a recommendation for forcing users to use
the proxy without having to configure each user's browser? I believe this is
referred to as transparent proxy.

I know my squid/squidGuard configurations are working now since I can
configure a thin client browser to use the proxy server (K12LTSP EL5) and it
works just fine.

I've set up transparent proxy in the /etc/squid/squid.conf for squid v2.6
but it does not work. Setting is: http_port 127.0.0.0:3128 transparent

I think the reason transparent proxy is not working is because I do not have
any iptables redirection of browser http traffic to the proxy server
(K12LTSP EL5).

Please advise.

OK, I seem to have muddled my way through getting squidGuard and the
blacklists installed. All the directories seem to be installed now as well.

The default install of squidGuard on K12LTSP EL5 is not working correctly
and requires significant work to get it as far as I have, especially with
the squidguard.conf file and the blacklist directories and files, which
would lock up due to no content in several of the directories listed in the
default squidguard.conf file.

However, my setup still has one more issue, which seems to be in the
verification that squidGuard is actually working.

Also, I would still like to get someone's input on their working
configuration. I would like to see their squidguard.conf file and how they
setup a thin client browser to use the proxy.

Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Charlie

BTW, I made the edits to the K12LTP wiki so that others don't have to
encounter this problem.

I changed the /usr/sbin to /usr/bin on both the Installation and Updates
pages.

However, I still have questions about the default configs and
directories. There is no default /var/squidGuard, /var/squidGuard/db,
/var/squidGuard/blacklists, or /var/log/squidGuard directories. Nor is
there any /etc/cron.d/squidGuard.

Does anyone have a working config for squidGuard with all the
directories with contents and a cron config?

Any help here is greatly appreciated. I will make the appropriate edits
to the K12LTSP wiki once I have everything configured and working
correctly so that no one else has to go through this again.

Thanks

Charlie

I think I just found the error you mentioned. The directions have the
wrong directory for the squidGuard executable.

Directions give: redirect_program /usr/sbin/squidGuard -c
/etc/squid/squidGuard.conf

Should be: redirect_program /usr/bin/squidGuard -c
/etc/squid/squidGuard.conf

That takes care of getting it running.

However, I still have questions about the default configs and
directories.

Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Charlie

Thank for the feedback.

One other thing about the default K12LTSP install for squidGuard is that
no database or log directory is configured either. So given that I would
suspect there are a number of items that are not completely ready to run
with squidGuard on K12LTSP.

I looked at the squidGuard site and read their docs and thought about
installing from scratch since it looks pretty straight forward, but the
problem with that would be that I might not get updates.

Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Charlie

Charlie,

I'm not at my office at the moment so I can't check the server we have
it running on. However the version of squid on EL 5 has slightly
different defaults than previous versions. I don't remember exactly but
I think the line for transparent proxy needs to be adjusted.
