[K12OSN] re: new lab install

John

it is possible, and once set up, very efficient for students to have one log in for all platforms. Trick is to join your terminal server to the windows domain using authentication (system-admin-authentication under fedora). Can be tricky but once set is seamless. We teach students (on gnome desktop) to connect to server (windows share - server - share), and they can open and work on files from their windows home directory on any thin client. The only drawback we have found is that users need to use a windows machine to change their password. Not sure why.....might be just me, and haven't had time to look into it, especially when we have a workaround.

Right- that's exactly the result I'm getting with K12LTSP 6.0.

I should add that I have been able to get this applet (sometimes) to
play sound through the server only, if the server is equipped with a
sound card (my production server is not). My guess is that the "failed
to initialize audio player") results from the applet's attempt to stream
audio to the server's IP.

try this

OK- I've run this as root on the server, using my server's IP as the
first parameter and the connected workstation's IP as the second. I do
get the same results from the Java applet: "unable to initialize audio
device."

As you've discovered from others who have replied, it may or may not fix
the issue. But regardless of that, you're asking to get compromised, so
in *any* case, you should upgrade.

Unless you want your Linux lab to also be blamed for virus attack
activity, that is....

Well,

1. The lab server sits behind several levels of corporate firewalling.

2. The current CentOS distro will not run on my hardware (old Dell
PERC/2 RAID).

Thanks to everyone here for your suggestions.

With K12LTSP you can set PURGE_PROCESSES="yes" in /etc/sysconfig/
k12ltsp, but since you're running Ubuntu that is probably not
available, since it seems to be a K12LTSP-specific mod. You might want
to file a bug for this if it's always the same process that doesn't
stop when it should.

Where exactly do u see Anthony saying its Ubuntu. I read the same mail
and it states:

I am having three major problems in our new lab (Fedora 9, LTSP 5,
Gnome Desktop, Kerenl 2.6.26.5-45.fc9.686.PAE, PAE enabled computer
with 13 GB RAM, 2 Quad core processors, 30 clients)

PURGE_PROCESSES=yes also requires that the K12initialize script has
modified the PostSession/Default script to include purge_user syntax.
This has not happened on the last two servers I have set up

Hello...

Back again for a second attempt at this... it's been about a year
since I installed a test lab for a district using ltsp4.2 / fc 6.
I will wipe the server clean and install k12ltsp version 5-EL
(unless some suggests version 5 / fedora 9)

[HISTORY]
Last year the teacher just didn't buy into Linux - kept comparing it
to and trying to make it Windows. She hacked and tried to use half XP
machines for some things and some thin-clients for others.
Long story short, it failed. After a recent meeting with
administration, the teachers, and accounting agreed to try it again.
My whole selling point was that this time (at least in the lab) they have
to let go of Windows.
Linux is not Windows... has some touch and feel like Windows, but is
not and never will be Windows.

[CURRENT]
I have a second chance to get the lab working. As we speak, they are
installing OpenOffice on all student and teacher machines (Windows
version).

[SCENARIO]
The campus is a Microsoft house. A couple of windows servers,
basically one for teachers and one for students. All the students have
their own student accounts. This way, as they progress through different
class rooms, they always have access to their one home directory. This is
the ONLY request from the campus. They would like to have the k12LTSP
running in the lab, but they would also like to only use one student
log in.

[QUESTION]
Is it possible for a student to use the one Windows account to log
into an XP machine in History class, then later again in English class
(working in each class) - then use the same login for computer lab, to
access their home directories to work on the English and History work
(that they created earlier - and is now all OpenOffice)...working on it from a thin client in
the lab?

We are a Novell house, I have a basic understanding of Windows
networking, and also understand Samba... I just need some basic
input that this is or is not possible (working in and out of
Windows / LTSP environments with one account)

Thank you in advance for your help and or suggestions.
