Unfortunately, I do not seem to have a network-scripts folder. I'm running Edubuntu 8.04.

You can force a NIC to be associated with a specific ethX by editing
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethX. If you specify the MAC
address and the ethX you want, you can completely determine the binding,
like this:

*HWADDR=00:1A:64:32:94:26
DEVICE=eth0*
IPADDR=10.0.61.8
NETMASK=255.255.0.0
ONBOOT=yes
TYPE=Ethernet

best,
-tim
