If you are willing to part with about $80, there's always Spinrite  
from GRC.com. You'll need windows (I used wine) to run the self  
extractor and have it create either an iso or floppy image. If you  
are going to be checking/recovering hard drives with any frequency,  
then it's worth the investment, assuming you are ok with buying non- 
free software (it IS DRM free).
