Jeff,

Sounds like you came up with a good setup for your shutdown wants.
One thing you could do as well is add in your script is like 'echo
"shutting down in 60 seconds"' in case someone is logged on. There
should be a pretty simple -s xxx before shutdown. This would at least be
a feeble attempt 'legal/disclaimer' sort of thing from the user point of
view.If there is any chance for someone to get mad using a
computer,you'll be the one to hear about it,for the tc shutting down in
the middle of typing a thesis,,,:) 
Are you doing like an auto 'turn-on' in the bios at hour x on these tc's
by chance?
