Normally, I'd think this was a video driver issue. But you say all
the clients are identical (RAM,CPU,VIdeo chipset, etc) So the first
two you boot (no matter which two it is) come up ok?

If this is the case, then I suspect that running off a USB attached
HD is really affecting your performance. But they still should come
up eventually.  How long are you waiting before you give up on them
booting?
