Can you set a blank root passwd with a kickstart file?

Just setup the password initially to something via the "rootpw" setting.
Then in the %post section remove the "x" from the /etc/passwd file for
the root account. You can do that with sed/awk/perl. This will render
the root account with NULL password.

Have you tried to set a "blank" password ?

If not, create a blank pw with :
perl -we 'print crypt("", "salt"). "\n"'
