Actually this message just means the appliance didn't start up.
There's no more detail available from the standard messages, and the
only way to find out more is to enable debugging.  ie:

  export LIBGUESTFS_DEBUG=1

or run:

  libguestfs-test-tool

I've pushed this commit to improve the error message:

Igor managed to fix the problem by upgrading to udev 170-1.
