On this throw-away handle we could check whether the unix backend is
built in (unlike in RHEL, for example):

     $g->set_backend ("unix:/idontexist");
 };
 if ($@) {
     warn "$0: skipping test because the 'unix' backend not available\n";
     exit 77;
 };
