I don't know what management software you use on top of qemu; in libvirt
it's certainly possible to remove a balloon device.

I see no reason for that, but that's out of scope of this discussion.

I got your point.  Looks like the patchset to cut down the amount of
regedits which I was about to post (I'm finishing testing it on various
Windows versions) won't work for you as is because it assumes only
single-file no-dependency storage drivers.  I'll post it anyway; we'll
see if it can be adjusted to cover your case, too.
