That's really helpful, thank you.  That's almost certainly what I'm seeing.

I've now spent a bit of time trying Ubuntu 21.04 (which has libguestfs 
1.44.1), both inside a VM and in an lxd container, but with various 
issues probably more to do with kvm than libguestfs. I may at some point 
try to build libguestfs from source on the 18.04 server itself.
