Yeah, I really like this patch series.  The change to
filters/retry/retry.c especially shows the power of the new API.

I'm happy for you to push it if you want (especially if it passes
make check && make check-valgrind).

I'll look at 15 & 16 in a sec since they're essentially separate from
this refactoring.
