[That said, an independent conversation on IRC pointed out that we
currently require the use of GNU make for other pre-existing reasons
within our various Makefile.am files.  Maybe a noble goal to make things
portable to other makes, but it's not a show-stopper and certainly
nowhere near the top of my todo list]
