Since I wrote that email, I've looked at other drivers in the codebase 
and decided it's not worth it. I've eliminated the forward declaration 
(as well as the others that I introduced in subsequent commits that I 
haven't upstreamed yet). I'll be submitting a revised set of patches 
shortly.
