Awesome, my first reply had no actual reply in it.  I just hit reply
then inexplicably pressed send.  So here's take two.

This looks good, it will hopefully fix a problem I've been having with
cu_return_instances, and it makes more sense anyway.  I'll do the change
to the callers.
