I will try it out - but right now, I'm stuck with 0.9.x on Debian Wheezy.

Now as you mention spice USB - are you sure that that's the only way?
Because if I add a USB device in virt-manager, it appears immediately
in the VM.

Another idea would probably be to use USP/IP [1] which is already
present as module on my Debian Wheezy installations.
