We need the domain object, and the device alias name, eg 

    virDomainOpenDeviceLogFile(virDomainPtr dom,
                               const char *name,
                               unsigned long long offset,
                               unsigned long long length,
	                       unsigned int flags);

Where name maps to <alias name=.../>.
