[Linux-cluster] New 2-node cluster, one service, active/passive or active/active?

I am in the process of building a 2 node RHEL4U4 cluster with the data
sitting on a fibre channel EMC ax150 SAN. My users access our internal
database by using a terminal emulator and sshing into the server. If I
have a 2 node cluster, can I load balance even though there will only be
one service (ssh), or is my only option to do an active/passive config?
If I can to active/active and load balance, do I need the shared
partitions on the SAN to use GFS or can they be ext3?

Thanks,

Brad
