Hi List,
Indeed it was the switch! Two of them, in fact!
For the benefit of future googlers, these switches didn't work with RHCS:
3Com Switch 4226T
HP ProCurve Switch 1800-24G
...and this one worked:
HP ProCurve 4104GL
