get mdadm from http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~neilb/source/mdadm/
and use the option --zero-superblock to wipe the superblock from
/dev/hda9

if you reduce an LV with lvreduce you must reduce the filesystem
BEFORE running lvreduce
