Oops.
What you wanted to run is "e2fsck -osb=N ..." to repair the existing
filesystem *not* mke2fs, which will create a new one!
As mentioned in my other email: if your logical filesystem blocksize was 4k,
your first superblock backup would have been on block 131072.
