You can present a password many ways. The Palmpilot for example permits
passwording as do most phones.  They don't expose any ideas of user id to the
user (even if they do internally have it as the Nokia 770 does).

Presented properly it should be a positive thing, ditto passwords for im
channels and encryptable email. Its a secret passphrase or in some cases a
shared secret password for a group. At least in the west such things seem
to go down well with children (providing the adults don't know the password ;))
