That won't help, I have up-to-date libpam, and xdm still doesn't work with
md5 and shadow. I am (as we speak) downloading the pamified xdm to try to
figure this out but I can confirm the problem as I have the exact same
one.

In case this helps:

[root@kinch bin]# ldd xdm.nowork
        libXmu.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXmu.so.6.0
        libXt.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6.0
        libSM.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libSM.so.6.0
        libICE.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6.0
        libXext.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6.1
        libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6.1
        libdl.so.1 => /lib/libdl.so.1.7.14
        libpam.so.0 => /usr/lib/libpam.so.0.56
        libc.so.5 => /lib/libc.so.5.3.12
