passwd coredumps as root, help in debugging?

Hi,

With:

	Red Hat 4.0
	passwd-0.50-2
	pam-0.57-3

Trying to change other users' passwords as root always seg faults.
I tried to debug passwd, and find that it fails here:

	  retval = pam_chauthtok(pamh, just_expired);

GDB finds that:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x400836b8 in strncmp ()

I would like to debug it myself, but when I try to link passwd with
the libpam.a and libpam_misc.a:

./passwd: can't resolve symbol 'pam_get_item'
./passwd: can't resolve symbol 'pam_get_user'
./passwd: can't resolve symbol 'pam_get_item'
./passwd: can't resolve symbol 'pam_set_item'
./passwd: can't resolve symbol 'pam_strerror'
./passwd: can't resolve symbol 'pam_get_item'
./passwd: can't resolve symbol 'pam_set_data'
./passwd: can't resolve symbol 'pam_set_item'
./passwd: can't resolve symbol 'pam_fail_delay'
./passwd: can't resolve symbol 'pam_strerror'
./passwd: can't resolve symbol 'pam_get_data'
./passwd: can't resolve symbol 'pam_get_user'
passwd: Permission denied

Any clues? This only happens on one of our systems, so I'm stumped.

Thanks,
