SunOS for sure, and solaris can use passwd.adjunct.byname too if it
finds something like ##login in the password field of
passwd.byname. And AIX can use passwd.adjunct.byname if it finds a "!"
as the password in passwd.byname :-).

So a useful but brutal hack should be something like that in libpwd:
look at shadow.byname if the password in passwd.byname is "x" (or
"*"), and look at passwd.adjunct.byname if the password in
passwd.byname is "!" or ##login (where login is the real login name of
the user).

   documented, so any additional information would be good.
