A safer alternative to pam_smb would be the pam_ntdom derivative, which Luke
Leighton put together for authentication specifically against an NT domain
controller.  Because NT domain authentication uses additional encryption,
there's less risk involved when using it on an open network.

Note that for this to work, the Unix box must first join the NT domain.
