Thanks!  That worked.  Removed the other name server and only used the local one and voila!

When I had this problem with my cluster, the cluster host file /etc/resolv.conf had inaccessible name servers; removing the inaccessible name servers
from resolv.conf (and dhcpd.conf in my case so they wouldn't be reasserted) speeded things up.
