Unable to login as root via serial port

Hi

I am unable to login as root via console ( serial port) in a Linux installation. I have 
added the console type in the /etc/securetty file.

Here is the output:


yosemiteR login: root
PAM-securetty[101]: access denied: tty 'console' is not secure!
Password:
login[101]: FAILED LOGIN (1) on console' FOR root', Authentication failure
Login incorrect

yosemiteR login:
Login timed out after 60 seconds.


Can any one help me out regarding the etc/pam.d module.
