pam_exim installing , server crashed, please help

On a production machine ? That's not good, since Debian already has PAM 
installed :

ii  libpam-runtime 0.76-22        Runtime support for the PAM library

ii  libpam0g-dev   0.76-22        Development files for PAM

Make sure you have networking going, and issue :

apt-get install --reinstall libpam-modules libpam-runtime libpam0g
