pam_mkhomedir on SuSE problems

I'm attempting to use pam_mkhomedir to create the user
directories automatically. I've added a line to /etc/pam.d/sshd
with the appropriate session directive:
  session required pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel/ umask=0022

Works as expected on RHEL4, SuSE 9.3, and SuSE 10. On SLES9 and
SuSE 9.2 though, when I ssh into the box I get a message from
pam_mkhomedir "Creating directory '/home/CORPQA/testadmin'", and
then the /etc/motd scrolls by, and then I get a connection closed.
When I check for the existence of the home directory, it is not
there. If I go and manually create /home/CORPQA, then pam_mkhomedir
is able to create the user directory, but if the CORPQA directory is
not present, then nothing gets created.

I've checked that the version of openssh on both systems is recent
enough that the Privilege Separation problems no longer seem applicable.
On SLES9, I'm running openssh-4.1p1-11.16, on SuSE 9.2 I'm running
openssh-3.9p1-3.6. Creating /etc/pam_debug has not resulted in any
more useful output that would help me figure this out.

Any suggestions?
