Sorry, I misunderstood the problem. Looks like it's not really a pam
issue but rather your root account's home directory isn't specified
correctly. Typically root's home dir is just "/root". Assuming you
have such a directory, you should be able to fix root's account via
the command "/usr/sbin/usermod -d /root root".
