Hi Eldan,

Yes, I think that both of the issues you raise are valid. The concern with where to place the inline help icon on forms fields has come up. Right now we don't have a standard solution but we should. The Forms pattern in available today in draft form, but will continue to evolve (see: https://www.patternfly.org/wikis/patterns/pattern-development/draft-patterns/forms/).

The question about roles and permissions is also a good one. I know this is a problem that comes up across multiple products and we don't have a common solution.

I will note these items in the pattern backlog and I invite you to get more involved in helping to work on developing these or any other patterns. I know that the time zone difference sometimes makes it difficult to attend our meetings, but I'll be glad to talk more about this. I've also copied in the patternfly list so others can comment on these issues or offer advice. Feel free to use the list as a sounding board for these types of issues, also, as they come up. We will never be able to cover every circumstance through the library, but by creating the PF community it provides a forum where these types of questions can be discussed in a way that helps us share solutions across projects.

Thanks,

Matt

Subject: help terms and permissions in patternfly

Hi Matt,
Just to remind,
I am: Eldan from RHEV/OVIRT UX.

There are few UX issues I would you to consider in PatternFly.

1. In rhev forms, we have a lot of terms that needs to be explained.
So far we had a small blue circle with a question mark inside. Rollovering this icon would explain the term next to it.
There are 2 problems: Developers tend to put this icon in many places: In the right side of the word, in the left side, spaces always varies.
The 2nd issue is that graphically those icon are making the form very crowded.
My solution, though I’m open to other solutions, is to have a dashed underline line under the term - the html tag used to be abbrev.
As you can see in the mockup, the forms are more cleaner and no fault of developer can be done here.
Example can be found here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1136440

2. User role, permission is something that look quite similliar in many systems.
Lots of rules create a role.
A permission is a assigned to a user directly or via an object - user X has permission Y on item Z.

I was wondering, perhaps we can create a pattern methodology of all Redhat’s products that will serve as a guide line for doing those thing in a more or less single way, since almost all IT products has permission.
(I think Openstack does it good).

Thanks,
Eldan
