even in NPTL, every thread gets a unique PID. The best test to see whether
NPTL is active is to do:

 $ grep tls /proc/self/maps
 42000000-4212e000 r-xp 00000000 09:00 732688     /lib/tls/libc-2.3.1.so
 4212e000-42131000 rw-p 0012e000 09:00 732688     /lib/tls/libc-2.3.1.so

switching back to LinuxThreads gives:

 $ export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
 $ grep tls /proc/self/maps
 $
