You are correct.  At first I thought it was an architectural statement
that it would be 0, which is why I made the change.  I've now looked
at the C language and it explicitly says that all extern declarations
are implicitly initialized to 0.  This is a language statement which
means it will be true for all platforms.

So instead of a bug fix consider it a style change.  It does make the
intention of the code more explicit.  Of course, feel free to ignore
what I now realize is a matter of style and not correctness.
