This is what append during boot on my system :

/dev/hda : first disk
/dev/hdc : second disk

- BIOS go to first sector of /dev/hda.

- grub is loaded.
the config file of grub (/boot/grub/grub.conf) have something like this
:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-2.2 ro root=/dev/md0

kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-2.2 : load the kernel named "vmlinuz-2.4.20-2.2"
from the first partition of the first disk (this can be changed : check
grub doc). Usually "vmlinuz" is in /dev/hda1 which is mounted in /boot .

root=/dev/md0 : The root file system is the first autodetect raid
software partition. The autodetection is do before mounting the root
file system !

Note that vmlinuz is loaded by grub and grub don't understand raid
software partition ! So everything used by grub during boot (vmlinuz,
initrd, grub.conf, etc...) should be in a normal partition. Usually
/dev/hda1 (mounted in /boot).

Good luck .
