Building rpms as root is not a good idea. Not that it helps here, the 
package fails with the same error for a normal user as well.

That said, rpm is now trying to add a 'debug' subpackage. After much 
fighting, I've found that adding both:
%define _enable_debug_packages 0
%define debug_package=""
to the spec file will stop it.

Or:
echo "%_enable_debug_packages 0" >> ~/.rpmmacros
echo "%debug_package=""" >> ~/.rpmmacros
Will accomplish the same thing for all packages you build.

I'm not sure why the variables in the file name are not getting expanded.
